When Alexander Musgrove steps down as Principal of the School of Art, Frank Johnston (1888–1949) is hired as his replacement.

Johnston, referred to as “an artistic volcano from Toronto” by Walter J. Phillips (1884–1963), was a member of the Group of Seven, which had formed one year earlier. He would play an instrumental but brief role (he left in 1924), connecting Winnipeg to the expanding Ontario College of Art in Toronto.
