Roger Selby (1934–1995) replaces Dr. Ferdinand Eckhardt (1902–1995) as WAG Director.

The new American Director, specializing in both art history and French language, had worked in several capacities at institutions in the United States, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Facing challenges out of the gate, such as a half-million dollar deficit, Selby makes some drastic changes, including staff reduction, cuts to raises, and 26 hours chopped off the Gallery’s opening hours. He instigates new fundraising drives to raise funds. “Perhaps in 1½ years,” he is quoted by the Winnipeg Tribune, “I’ll be able to be a nice guy.”
