The Second World War ends for Canada on August 15.

The immediate post-war years are hard for the Winnipeg Art Gallery Association. Exhibition programming is curtailed in the face of funding shortages, and the Gallery is, once again, almost forced to close its doors.

The Gallery’s first exhibition of non-Western art is mounted this year, displaying works by modern Chinese painters Kao Weng and Chang K’un-I, organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
