December 1, 1949, Winnipeg Free Press.

The Women’s Auxiliary stage their first annual exhibition, Do You Own a Canadian Painting, designed to promote the private collecting, as well as the sale, of works by contemporary Canadian artists.

This 1949 invitational exhibition evolves into a series of annual exhibitions.  Funds raised from the commission charged on sales are redirected toward the Gallery’s acquisition fund. In the mid-1950s, the Do You Own a Canadian Painting exhibitions are transformed into the series of professional national juried exhibitions known as the Winnipeg Show.
