In the fall George Swinton (1917–2002) becomes a professor at the University of Manitoba School of Art.

Swinton was a Viennese artist and academic who had moved to Canada at the outbreak of the Second World War. Prior to arriving in Winnipeg, Swinton had been curator, art instructor, and artist-in-residence in Saskatchewan and Ontario. A respected artist, Swinton would gain fame as a leading early collector and expert on Inuit art. He was also the art critic for the Winnipeg Tribune from 1954–1958.
