George Haynes (d. 1974) joins the Gallery as its first preparator, overseeing matters of shipping, framing, and art installation. He would remain with the Gallery until death, 20 years later.
Reflecting on Haynes’s life, Director Ferdinand Eckhardt (1902–1995) wrote in the 1974 Gallery newsletter, “In the exciting and sometimes frustrating pioneer years, George Haynes, with his dry English humour and tenacity was a most dependable assistant. Everyone who had worked with this loyal and very helpful man, particularly myself, will always remember him fondly.” He worked with Eckhardt “through the high and the low points and the agonies, starting at a time when there were only three on Gallery staff.”
