Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald, The Jar, 1938. Collection of the Winnipeg Art Gallery; Gift of the Women's Committee. G-56-25

Over the winter of 1956/57 the Women’s Committee acquires 26 paintings and drawings by Winnipeg artist and longtime School of Art Principal, Lionel Lemoine FitzGerald (1890–1956), who had died in August.

From this early initiative, the Gallery would go on to become the largest repository of the work of this important modernist painter, one of the last three artists to join the Group of Seven. FitzGerald’s collection at the Gallery now numbers over 1,000 pieces.
