The Volunteer Associates of the Winnipeg Art Gallery, formerly the Volunteer Committee (and the Women’s Committee and Women’s Auxiliary before that), marks its 60th anniversary.

By 2009 the Volunteer Associates had made possible the acquisition of more than 1,800 works of art, awarded 900 Studio Programs scholarships to young students, and donated countless books to the WAG’s Clara Lander Library. They also gave nearly $875,000 to the Winnipeg Art Gallery Foundation. For many years their Painting and Art in the Park programs introduced the beauty and excitement of art to school children throughout the city, and provided regular sponsorship of the annual Through the Eyes of a Child exhibition. In the 1950s and 1960s they organized the highly acclaimed series of Winnipeg Shows, which introduced local audiences to contemporary art.
