On June 5, the WAG opens an exhibition of work by Kent Monkman, a Manitoba-born Toronto-based artist of Cree and Irish ancestry.
Monkman produces work in a variety of media. He is perhaps best known for his humorously salacious large-scale paintings that draw on a range of influences, from 19th century ethnography and the North American romantic landscape tradition, to classic Hollywood westerns and contemporary queer culture. Kent Monkman: The Triumph of Mischief is a collaborative project between the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
