The blockbuster exhibition Spirit of Ukraine: 500 years of Painting, bringing in over 20,000 visitors by the time it closes in November.

In honour of the centenary of Ukrainian settlement in Canada, and the fact that Winnipeg is home to the largest Ukrainian-Canadian population in Western Canada, the WAG organizes an exhibition of over 100 paintings dating from the 15th to the 20th centuries, borrowed from the State Museum of Ukrainian Art. Objects include religious painting, folk art, academic painting by artists such as Ilya Repin (1844–1930), and avant-garde modern work by David Burliuk (1882–1967). Prior to the exhibition arriving in Winnipeg, WAG preparatory and conservation staff members Maurice Fox and Catherine Collins travelled to Soviet Ukraine to inspect and pack the loaned art for shipping.
