"The 1984 Miss General Idea Pageant Rehearsal", 1977. Winnipeg Art Gallery.
Reflecting the increasingly contemporary and innovative programming at the Gallery, the WAG hosts The 1984 Miss General Idea Pageant Rehearsal in October.
The pageant rehearsal was one of a series of performance art pieces the now internationally celebrated Canadian conceptual troupe General Idea had presented since the late 1960s. The event transformed the Gallery into a television studio, with the members of General Idea (two of which—A. A. Bronson and Felix Partz (1945–1994)—had spent their formative years in Winnipeg) rehearsing “the audience for the correct responses for an imagined future 1984 beauty pageant.” The performance culminates in “a rehearsal” for the pageant after-party scene “complete with bar” and music by the Toronto art rock band The Dishes, who also release an album titled Hot Property at the event.
