Eckhardt was accompanied by his wife Sonia Eckhardt-Gramatté (d. 1974), an accomplished composer and widow of the German Expressionist painter Walter Gramatté (1897–1929). Gramatté died of Tuberculosis in 1929 at the age of 32. A few years later while studying the art of Gramatté, Eckhardt tracked down Gramatté’s widow, and the two fell in love.
